IL CRIPTIDE DI ALVIGNANELLO

Era il tre maggio del 2020. All’imbrunire, Vincenzo Tufano si trovava nei pressi di Alviglianello (frazione del Comune di Ruviano in provincia di Caserta): nel sottobosco, era intento a raccogliere della legna da ardere, quando all’improvviso, sentì uno strano rumore. Era un rumore sordo, per nulla familiare, un boato che proveniva da un boschetto ubicato alla sua destra. Incuriosito, Vincenzo si inoltrò nel bosco: c’era poca luce. Quindi accese la potente torcia che usava portare con se durante le escursioni e notò subito, proprio davanti a se, una massa enorme. Cercando di capire in cosa si era imbattuto si avvicinò e giunto a pochi metri di distanza si accorse che erano due enormi zampe. Ebbe modo di osservale bene: erano leggermente ricurve, come se la creatura tenesse le piante dei piedi leggermente rialzate. Puntò la torcia verso l’alto per osservare le gambe: due giganteschi “tronchi” squamosi, il cui spessore era almeno sei o sette volte maggiore dei tronchi delle querce circostanti: le gambe di un bipede, non identificabile. Date le dimensioni, Vincenzo dovette pensare che potesse trattarsi di un simulacro ma non notò alcuna sorta di parti meccaniche. La pelle era quella di un rettile. Si notavano dei grossi spuntoni di un colore verde intenso, lunghi fino a due metri che si rimpicciolivano lungo la zona femorale. Questi aculei – affermerà in un’intervista successiva, rilasciata alla ricercatrice Erika Di Cuonzo - vibravano continuamente, come una corda di violino. Sgomento, Vincenzo si allontanò rapidamente di alcuni metri, poi fece qualcosa che, di solito, i testimoni non fanno: con grande determinazione si voltò, afferrò il cellulare, impostò lo zoom e scattò quattro foto per immortalare l’epidermide della creatura. Riuscii a immortalare una parte squamosa del misterioso animale a metà tra quella di un coccodrillo, una tartaruga e una lucertola preistorica. Cioè aveva varie tonalità e caratteristiche di colore. Con queste precise parole Vincenzo, nel corso dell’intervista, descriverà la misteriosa creatura definendola per la prima volta come un “animale”.

Quel che successe immediatamente dopo, viene così raccontato nell’intervista: “la paura mi fece desistere quando notai a terra il formarsi di un immenso cono d’ombra. Spostando lo sguardo dal basso verso l’alto intravidi la sua gigantesca testa che oscillava a destra e a sinistra insieme a tutto il suo corpo come fanno i draghi di Comodo quando strisciano al suolo. Anche sulla testa aveva dei giganteschi aculei e delle membrane verdastre che vibravano a intervalli regolari. Gli occhi erano rossi ma con contorni giallastri. Il volto era un misto tra un coccodrillo, un cavallo e un vitello. Mi voltai e corsi via, ma nella frenetica fuga inciampai e caddi a terra, impattando con il palmo della mano destra. Recuperai la torcia che mi era caduta e percorsi il sentiero correndo, rientrai in auto e mi allontanai. Intanto sentii ancora quel boato.”

il testimone, pur allontanandosi dal luogo, si sentì in pericolo o percepì che la creatura poteva rappresentare un grande pericolo per gli altri. Tanto che decise di sporgere denuncia alle autorità. Non fu solo un atto di civiltà, ma anche di coraggio in quanto metteva a repentaglio la sua reputazione. Non siamo in grado di stabilire concretamente cosa abbia visto ma, decisamente, pensiamo che la sua non sia una visione: è sincero ed è convinto della realtà del suo racconto.

Nei giorni successivi Vincenzo guiderà i Carabinieri del Comando locale e i Carabinieri Forestali nell’esplorazione della zona. Vennero rilevate decine di orme giganti appartenenti a un qualcosa dalle proporzioni colossali, nelle quali erano evidenti i segni lasciati da tre artigli. Lo studio di queste orme non porterà ad alcun risultato. Tuttavia, una lunga scia di cadaveri, soprattutto di cinghiali, volpi, cani ma anche ovini verranno, di volta in volta, ritrovati in quei luoghi dove puntualmente c’erano impresse sul terreno delle grosse impronte a tre artigli. In alcune occasioni le predazioni furono indagate da gruppi di veterinari che rilevarono sul posto dei residui di peluria color mogano e grosse squame. Queste ultime, alle analisi, risultarono essere simili a quelle di un camaleonte.

In conclusione: cos’era quella creatura? Il nostro protagonista risponde così a questa domanda: “in base a ciò che ho visto e al materiale analizzato da veterinari, zoologi e C.C. Forestali, possiamo postulare un’ipotesi sulla possibilità che ci troviamo davanti a un qualcosa di non convenzionale, forse mutato per cause ancora ignote.

Verso la fine del 2020 fu piazzato un sistema di fototrappole tra il fiume Volturno e i boschi di Alvignanello. Le apparecchiature furono assicurate ai tronchi degli alberi e poste a un’altezza di circa cinque metri. Dotate di sensori di movimento, sono un sistema autonomo utile per sorvegliare zone impervie e/o boscose. Fornite di led a infrarossi possono effettuare riprese anche di notte. Il sistema si attiva al momento: se rileva un movimento, in automatico, inizia la registrazione di un video, di un audio oppure viene scattata una fotografia. In questo caso le fototrappole erano impostate solo su foto e audio. Catturarono l’immagine di un animale impossibile da identificare. Dalle tracce impresse sul terreno, si evinse che la creatura immortalata passò vicino all’albero per poi tornare indietro. Un’orma particolarmente definita e profonda misurava circa 80 cm. di lunghezza: si trattava di un animale straordinariamente grande.

Di solito, concludo così i miei post, lasciando che sia il lettore a trarne le conclusioni. Devo però ammettere che il caso, pur nella sua stranezza, mi intriga, poiché fornisce più domande che risposte. La zona dell’avvistamento è di fatto, una “zona calda” dove cioè si rilevano segnalazioni di urla agghiaccianti non riferibili ad alcun animale conosciuto. Inoltre, è fonte di numerosi avvistamenti di UFO nonché di fenomeni metafisici e paranormali. Aggiungiamoci anche una leggenda locale che narra di una creatura descritta come un ibrido tra un uomo e un drago che viveva lungo le sponde del fiume Volturno. L’essere usciva allo scoperto solo di notte. Gli anziani del posto raccontano ancora oggi storie riguardo la sua esistenza.

È anche sede di una centrale nucleare, quella del Garigliano, posta in territorio di Sessa Aurunca e quindi a pochi chilometri da Alvignanello. Negli anni ’80 l’impianto fu teatro di un incidente: a quanto pare, vi fu una perdita di materiale radioattivo che causò malformazioni nei nascituri. Malformazioni di tipo congenite come, ad esempio, mucche con due teste o galline con tre zampe. Un vitello nacque con due cervelli. Tra la popolazione residente, si sono avuti numerosi decessi a causa di tumori, ma non vi sono prove per collegare queste morti ai danni delle radiazioni. Nonostante che la centrale nucleare sia, da tempo, inattiva, gli strascichi di questo disastro si sono protratti nel tempo. Alcuni bambini nacquero malformati. La radioattività influì negativamente anche sullo sviluppo delle piante.

Secondo alcuni, le radiazioni sono la causa che ha prodotto una mutazione, generando un animale non convenzionale. Solo nei racconti di fantascienza le mutazioni portano a degli effetti positivi e tra questi ci può essere il gigantismo (Cfr. Gozzilla) nella realtà portano a malformazione alle quali i nascituri stentano a sopravvivere. E non è detto che la sopravvivenza porti a questi esseri qualche vantaggio: mosche nate con quattro ali, per esempio, non hanno dimostrato di saper volare meglio o più velocemente, anzi erano alquanto impacciate nel volo o addirittura incapaci di librarsi in aria.

Ma, ammesso che sia vero, come potrebbe un animale di tale stazza trovare tante prede e quindi sostentamento in una zona che, seppur boscosa, non è certo la foresta amazzonica?!

Ci troviamo, forse, di fronte a un enigma simile a quello riscontrato nei pressi di Loch Ness, dove in un piccolo lago dovrebbe esistere un predatore gigantesco?

Indubbiamente si tratta di una creatura molto grande, anche se i riferimenti del testimone non ci permettono di stabilire esattamente quanto. Ma come fa una creatura così grande a passare del tutto inosservata?

Possiamo solo ipotizzare che faccia ricorso a una forma estrema e molto efficiente di mimetismo che lo rende quasi invisibile. Lo stesso testimone non se ne avvede se non quando gli finisce praticamente tra le zampe. La creatura, però, non sembra accorgersi della sua presenza, neanche quanto inizia a fuggire via. Una stranezza, visto che i rettili, ma in realtà tutti i predatori, sono ricettivi ai movimenti rapidi delle prede.

THE CRYPTID OF ALVIGNANELLO

It was May 3, 2020. At dusk, Vincenzo Tufano was near Alvignanello (a fraction of the Municipality of Ruviano in the province of Caserta - Italy): in the undergrowth, he was intent on collecting firewood, when suddenly, he heard a strange noise. It was a dull, unfamiliar sound, a roar coming from a grove to his right. Intrigued, Vincenzo went into the woods: there was little light. Then he turned on the powerful flashlight that he used to carry with him on excursions and immediately noticed, right in front of him, a huge mass. Trying to understand what he had come across he approached and when he reached a few meters away he realized that they were two huge paws. He got a good look at them: they were slightly curved, as if the creature was holding the soles of its feet slightly raised. He pointed the flashlight upwards to observe the legs: two gigantic scaly "trunks", whose thickness was at least six or seven times greater than the trunks of the surrounding oaks: the legs of an unidentifiable biped. Given the size, Vincenzo must have thought that it could be a simulacrum but he did not notice any sort of mechanical parts. The skin was that of a reptile. There were large spikes of an intense green color, up to two meters long, which dwindled along the femoral area. These quills - he will affirm in a subsequent interview, given to researcher Erika Di Cuonzo - vibrated continuously, like a violin string. Dismayed, Vincenzo quickly moved away a few meters, then did something that, usually, witnesses do not do: with great determination he turned around, grabbed his cell phone, set the zoom and took four photos to immortalize the skin of the creature. I managed to capture a scaly part of the mysterious animal halfway between that of a crocodile, a turtle and a prehistoric lizard. That is, it had various shades and color characteristics. With these precise words Vincenzo, during the interview, will describe the mysterious creature, defining it for the first time as an "animal".

What happened immediately after is told in the interview as follows: "Fear made me give up when I noticed the formation of an immense cone of shadow on the ground. Moving my gaze from the bottom up, I glimpsed his gigantic head swinging left and right along with his whole body as the dragons of Comodo do when they crawl on the ground. On his head, too, he had giant spikes and greenish membranes that vibrated at regular intervals. His eyes were red but with yellowish outlines. His face was a mixture of a crocodile, a horse and a calf. I turned and ran away, but in the frenzied escape I tripped and fell to the ground, impacting with the palm of my right hand. I retrieved the flashlight that I had dropped and ran down the path, got back in the car and drove away. Meanwhile, I heard that roar again."

the witness, while moving away from the place, felt in danger or perceived that the creature could represent a great danger to others. So much so that he decided to file a complaint with the authorities. It was not only an act of civility, but also of courage as it jeopardized his reputation. We are not able to concretely establish what he has seen but, definitely, we think that his is not a vision: he is sincere and is convinced of the reality of his story.

In the following days Vincenzo will lead the Carabinieri of the local Command and the Forestry Carabinieri in the exploration of the area. Dozens of giant footprints were found belonging to something of colossal proportions, in which the marks left by three claws were evident. The study of these footprints will not lead to any results. However, a long trail of corpses, especially wild boars, foxes, dogs but also sheep will, from time to time, be found in those places where large three-clawed footprints were punctually imprinted on the ground. On some occasions the predations were investigated by groups of veterinarians who found residues of mahogany-colored hair and large scales on the spot. The latter, upon analysis, turned out to be similar to those of a chameleon.

In conclusion: what was that creature? Our protagonist answers this question in this way: “based on what I have seen and on the material analyzed by veterinarians, zoologists and C.C. Foresters, we can postulate a hypothesis on the possibility that we are faced with something unconventional, perhaps changed for yet unknown causes.

Towards the end of 2020 a camera trap system was placed between the Volturno river and the Alvignanello woods. The equipment was secured to the tree trunks and placed at a height of about five meters. Equipped with motion sensors, they are an autonomous system useful for monitoring inaccessible and / or wooded areas. Equipped with infrared LEDs, they can also shoot at night. The system is activated with the moment: if it detects a movement, it automatically starts recording a video, an audio or a photograph is taken. In this case the camera traps were set to only photos and audio. They captured the image of an animal impossible to identify. From the traces imprinted on the ground, it was clear that the immortalized creature passed near the tree and then came back. A particularly defined and deep footprint measured about 80 cm. in length: it was an extraordinarily large animal.

Usually, I end my posts like this, letting the reader draw the conclusions. But I must admit that the case, despite its strangeness, intrigues me, as it provides more questions than answers. The sighting area is in fact a "hot zone" where there are reports of chilling screams not related to any known animal. In addition, it is the source of numerous UFO sightings as well as metaphysical and paranormal phenomena. Let's also add a local legend that tells of a creature described as a hybrid between a man and a dragon that lived along the banks of the Volturno river. The being came out only at night. The local elders still tell stories about its existence today.

It is also home to a nuclear power plant, that of Garigliano, located in the territory of Sessa Aurunca and therefore a few kilometers from Alvignanello. In the 1980s the plant was the scene of an accident: apparently, there was a loss of radioactive material that caused malformations in the unborn. Congenital type malformations such as, for example, two-headed cows or three-legged hens. A calf was born with two brains. There have been numerous deaths from cancer among the resident population, but there is no evidence to link these deaths to radiation damage. Despite the fact that the nuclear power plant has been inactive for some time, the aftermath of this disaster has continued over time. Some children were born malformed. Radioactivity also negatively affected plant development.

According to some, radiation is the cause that produced a mutation, generating an unconventional animal. Only in science fiction stories do mutations lead to positive effects and among these there can be gigantism (See Gozzilla) in reality they lead to malformations to which the unborn can hardly survive. And survival does not necessarily lead to any advantage to these beings: flies born with four wings, for example, have not been shown to be able to fly better or faster, on the contrary they were somewhat awkward in flight or even unable to soar in the air.

But, assuming it is true, how could an animal of this size find so many prey and therefore sustenance in an area that, although wooded, is certainly not the Amazon rainforest ?!

Are we perhaps faced with an enigma similar to that found near Loch Ness, where a gigantic predator should exist in a small lake?

Undoubtedly it is a very large creature, even if the references of the witness do not allow us to establish exactly how much. But how does such a large creature go completely unnoticed?

We can only speculate that it resorts to an extreme and very efficient form of mimicry that makes it almost invisible. The same witness does not notice it until it ends up practically between his paws. The creature, however, does not seem to notice its presence, not even when it begins to run away. An oddity, since reptiles, but actually all predators, are receptive to rapid movements of prey.
